How to Control Overthinking

Payal Singh 0

As humans, we all think all the time, but sometimes we can’t stop thinking over and over on specific points. At that time, we start overthinking, and overthinking makes you stressed and worried because we are playing one thought again and again in our mind. This will make you feel more worried, and when we feel anxiety, it makes you feel tired even without doing any hard work because we are spending all our energy on overthinking. So, you cannot focus on other things, and continuous thinking can drain all your body energy. Many of us do not want to overthink, but we have the habit of thinking over and over about a particular thought, and this can ruin your whole day. In this blog, we will learn how you can control overthinking so you can do your work with proper focus.

How to Stop Overthinking

1. Live in the Present Moment

We all have suffered from overthinking because we start thinking a lot about the past and future rapidly, and it becomes overthinking. When we overthink, we start living in the past, and living in the past is just a waste of human energy because you cannot do anything with the past and also you can’t change it. But still, sometimes we feel stuck in our past memories and moments—not because we want to, but because those memories make us feel happy for some time. Then it becomes hard to focus on the present moment.
Most of the time, we do not want to involve ourselves in the present because we are deeply involved in past thoughts and moments, and we start replaying these thoughts and moments again in our mind, which creates overthinking. So, if you want to live in the present moment, just stop living in the past and start focusing on your present. We can change our mind and focus by concentrating on the present moment. Living in the present is essential to stop overthinking. Enjoy your present moments so you can make good memories for the future, and good memories always give us happiness.

2. Write Your Thoughts

We think keeping all thoughts inside our mind would be better to avoid problems, but sometimes it makes our brain feel heavy. When we do not want to share our thoughts with anyone—because sometimes sharing our thoughts makes us feel uncomfortable, or because of trust issues, or other reasons—we keep them inside. But that’s also true: people who keep a core of unsaid thoughts inside their mind create their own stories, and when we have a core of thoughts, we start replaying these thoughts, moments, and stories in our mind, and we start overthinking.
When you do not have anyone to share your thoughts with, take a notebook and pen and start writing down your thoughts—what’s going on in your mind. It will help you understand your core thoughts and help clear your mind. So, when you are feeling heavy because of overthinking, writing them down makes you feel lighter and helps you stop overthinking.

3. Keep Yourself Busy

When a human mind is free, it invites unnecessary thoughts. At that time, our mind and body are totally free, and we do not have anything to focus on, so we start thinking about anything—replaying past moments or stories which do not exist in the present time. A free mind is the enemy of humans. Keep yourself busy with what makes you feel happy. You can read a book, cook, listen to music, work out, or go for a walk. Keeping yourself busy means your brain cannot pop up with other thoughts. For example, if you are reading a book in your free time, you are totally involved in the story, so you cannot overthink. That’s why keeping yourself busy helps your mind stay engaged, and busy people always have many things to do in their life, so they can stay away from overthinking.

4. Talk with Someone You Trust

Sharing something with someone can make you feel lighter. Often, we start feeling heavy when we hold unsaid thoughts and feelings. Whenever you feel heavy and start overthinking, talk to someone. When we share our problems and worries with friends or family members, they become smaller, because most of the time the problem is not the real problem—our mind makes it a problem. Our mind converts small problems into big ones and then overthinks them. Having good talks with someone you trust can really stop you from overthinking.

5. Think Positive

As humans, we cannot stop thinking because it is human nature. When our mind is free, thoughts will arise, but we can allow only positive thoughts. Instead of asking negative questions to yourself, ask: “Is spending energy on these thoughts really worth it for me?” Because we often think negatively instead of positively, and when we ask negative questions to ourselves, they create core negative thoughts that lead to overthinking. So, when you think—think positive. Our thoughts impact our body and confidence. Read and listen to something that makes your mind filled with positive thoughts.

End Thought

We cannot control overthinking in one day—it takes time. Stop overthinking about things that do not exist. To stop overthinking, you will have to start taking small steps every day—meditation, keeping yourself busy, watching positive podcasts, and listening to positive music. These can help you stop overthinking.
When we start building any habit, it takes time. You cannot build a habit and stop overthinking in a few days—it will take time. Overthinking is killing your creativity, and you are spending all your energy on your thoughts. It is essential to stop your overthinking habit today and live your life peacefully.
